Watsu
Water Shiatsu
is a form of aquatic bodywork.
Janet Balaskas, world-renowned natural childbirth
pioneer writes in her book 'the Water Birth Book' "-
this is the future for birth preparation in water. If
you hear of a Watsu based pregnancy class or workshop be
sure to try it" " this is the ultimate
preparation for a water birth"
WATSU
began in California in 1980, coupling the
ancient oriental principles of Zen Shiatsu
with the intrinsically relaxing sensation of
floatation in warm water. Harold Dull, the
founder of WATSU, has continued to develop
the technique and is respected by many
people practicing in the medical profession
and complimentary therapies. WATSU students
undergo extensive stages of training before
qualifying for full practitioner status,
maintaining the excellence of standards.
WATSU
relieves the tension which causes stress that
can be a factor in many common health problems.
Watsu can therefore offer relief from:-
-
Anxiety
- Pain
-
Fatigue
-

Clare's
experience of Watsu
I had the pleasure of meeting Dawn, my local Watsu
practitioner about 3 years ago. She told me of her work
as a specialist swimming instructor, and Watsu
practitioner, her passion for Watsu is amazing and not
unfounded!.
I was not a swimmer and had a terrible fear of water
(following a childhood experience) Watsu sounded amazing
though. Unfortunately during my pregnancy with my
daughter I didn't have the confidence to try out Watsu
- I wish I had!
After the birth of my daughter I had a group of swimming
lessons from Dawn which were amazing, her calmness and
confidence in me along with her fantastic patient
teaching skills allowed me to slowly become more
confident in the water. With my newly found slight
confidence in my ability not to drown when in contact
with water, I booked a Watsu session!
I arrived at the pool, slightly nervous as I didn't know
exactly what to expect. Dawn was there to great me with
her friendly enthusiasm which calmed me. I changed, a
stepped into a beautifully warm pool. Warmer than during
my swimming lessons - it was like stepping into a large
warm bath. Just getting into the water was relaxing, I
was excited that I was already feeling so relaxed and my
Watsu hadn't even began!
Dawn explained to me what would happen and I relaxed
even more as she gently supported me in the water.
Closing my eyes I passed my trust into Dawn, and my
Watsu began.
I couldn't tell you how long I was there if Dawn hadn't
told me. I lost all track of time, not a mean feat for a
mum of 2 under the age of 2! I was completely awake and
alert throughout, however I have never felt so calm,
thoughts would drift into my head but it was as if I
couldn't catch them - they would just drift back out
again, it was just to much work to try to think. I
remember hearing water gurgling around me and it felt
warm, comforting and incredibly safe.
Dawn gently moved me around in the water - I will not
even try to explain how amazing this felt. My hands and
feet were massaged and I was gently stretched which was
amazing. I was too relaxed to remember anything else.
Then my Watsu came to an end as Dawn gently stood me in
the warm waters, I didn't want to open my eyes, I was
just too comfortable and didn't want my session to end.
Watsu is a deeply relaxing, profound experience, it was
like having a full nights sleep in 45 minutes. I now
regularly have Watsu sessions - it is my treat! I
strongly wish I had used this during my pregnancy. It
will be the first thing I book when I am pregnant again.
